I’ve had so many new curlies this week, which is always such a treat! I love walking through the CurlyCut process and the different products we use along the way. Most of my new curly clients come to me with a lot of fear from past experiences, so I love the process of earning trust and growing rapport.

7 years ago, I was an employee at a small salon. I knew I wanted to be an independent stylist, but was scared to take the leap.

In March of 2018, I went to New York to get my DevaCurl Level 3 certification. My sister tagged along and we saw Wicked on a whim, getting last minute, day-of tickets. We knew nothing about the show, other than it had something to do with Wizard of Oz. Cut to us weeping at the end of Act I. We were fans.

On the trip, I made my decision. I was going to start my own business and be an independent stylist. I sat down with my boss and gave my two weeks notice. The words he said have lived rent free in my mind for almost 7 years: “You’re good, but not THAT good.” I was crushed and my fears intensified. Was I making the right decision?

So I did what every normal former theater kid would do: I listened to Defying Gravity on an endless loop for the next 6 months, as I scraped by getting my business started. Needless to say, this show has meant a lot to me and I’ve been so pumped to see the movie! And holy smokes, it did not disappoint.

In April, I’ll celebrate 7 years as an independent stylist. I’ve never looked back. I know I wouldn’t be here without, first and foremost my God who sustains me, and secondly, all the support from my INCREDIBLE clients. You guys are how I’ve made it here.

2025 is going to be a big year. And in the words of my girl Elphaba, “To those who ground me, take a message back from me. Tell them how I am defying gravity.”
